Until I did this exact steps, my Windows 11 virtual machine install would not get the upgrade from Microsoft. Therefore, I had to force upgrade Windows 11 to the latest 24H2 release. Otherwise, I’m not sure how long I would have to wait until Microsoft decides to release it for my machine.

Oh, in case you’re wondering why a Windows-related guide on my primarily Mac tech blog, I do still run a Windows 11 VM on Parallels on my Mac!

How to Force upgrade Windows 11 to the latest 24H2 Release

Doing so is relatively easy. You just need to create a Windows registry entry to make Windows Update to show the release upgrade.

I’ve uploaded the windows registry file here, but you can easily just create the same file using notepad as well.

Creating the Windows Registry file to force update to 24H2 version.

If you are creating the file yourself on Notepad, make sure you select to save it as a .reg file. This will make it easier for you to import the registry key.

Save the file as a .reg file

Next, double click on the file and add it to your Windows Registry.

Add the 24H2 release target to the registry

Download and install 24H2 update

Once you’ve done that, you should now see the Windows 11, version 24H2 update now available in Windows Update. The update will take a while but once you’re done, you would have finally force upgrade Windows 11 to the latest 24H2 version.
