Best Settings to Play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on macOS (M2 Max)
After finishing Final Fantasy VII Remake on my Mac, I had to give Rebirth a go. It is a much bigger game and I was curious just how well it would hold up on the M2 Max Mac Studio via CrossOver 26.1. Good news: it runs. With the right mods and settings, it is genuinely enjoyable. Here is everything you need to know to get it running well on your Mac.

CrossOver 26.1
CrossOver 26 from CodeWeavers is the layer that lets you run Windows games on your Mac. It uses D3DMetal (Apple’s GPTK) under the hood, which means DX11 and DX12 games like FF7 Rebirth can run relatively well on a Mac. It also supports DLSS, which helps squeeze out extra frames.
This will cost you about $74 usually. Sometimes there are promos like Black Friday, etc so you might be able to snag it cheaper. You can also use the code “PEAZ15” to get 15% off.
Once you purchased and installed CrossOver, you’re
\n\n\n\nOne thing worth noting: after updating to the CrossOver Preview build (20260717), which includes GPTK 4.0 beta, frame rates stay pretty much the same numbers but the overall experience feels noticeably smoother and more stable. D3DMetal in GPTK 4.0 beta feels more optimised, even on macOS Tahoe. If you are on CrossOver 26, it is worth updating to the Preview build.
Installing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on macOS
If you have not set it up yet, check out my FF7 Remake guide for the full CrossOver setup walkthrough. I recommend just going to Steam and installing Rebirth in the same bottle. The Rebirth will give you DLC bonuses if it detects Remake and Intermission save data. The bonuses are Summon Materia.
- FF7 Remake save data → Leviathan Summon Materia
- FF7 Episode Intermission save data → Ramuh Summon Materia
You unlock them from the menu: System > DLC/Bonuses, but only after reaching Chapter 2 (the Grasslands).
For CrossOver on Mac, the key thing is that Rebirth scans for the Remake save files. Since both games run in separate CrossOver bottles, you need to make sure the Remake save data is in the right place. On PC it looks for saves at Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY VII Remake\Steam\[YOUR-STEAM-ID]\. Within CrossOver, that path lives inside the Remake bottle’s virtual drive, so Rebirth in its own bottle may not detect it automatically.
Mods You Need Before Playing
Unlike Remake, FF7 Rebirth benefits from three mods that make a real difference to performance and stability. Install these before you even launch the game for the first time.
A. FFVIIHook
FFVIIHook is an INI and dev console unlocker that allows the game to read custom Engine.ini configurations. Without it, the other engine tweaks will not load.

- Download and extract the FFVIIHook mod.
- Rename
xinput1_3.dlltodxgi.dllto avoid gamepad conflicts. - Copy
dxgi.dllto the game’s Win64 folder alongsideff7rebirth_.exe. The path will be something like/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/FF VII REBIRTH/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH/End/Binaries/Win64.

One easy way to start finding the location is to right-click on the bottle on CrossOver app and Open C: Drive. Here’s an example.

If you’re using the same bottle with your FF VII REMAKE install using my guide, then you would already have overridden dxgi.dll. Otherwise, On the Final Fantasy VII Steam bottle, go to Wine Configurations → Libraries and add dxgi to override it.

B. Ultimate Engine Tweaks
Ultimate Engine Tweaks modifies the Unreal Engine INI to remove most stutters, reduce input latency, and improve overall stability. It makes a noticeable difference from the moment you load in.

- Start the game at least once so that the Save game folder is created.
- Then, go to the
Documents/My Games/FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor/ - I’d backup the existing
Engine.inifile asEngine.ini.bak. - Extract the mod and copy the
Engine.inifile to your save game config folder.

C. Fantasy Optimizer
Fantasy Optimizer optimises shader compilation and asset streaming to considerably reduce the stuttering at the start of new scenes. It is a pak mod, so it drops straight into the game’s mods folder. I had to use this mod in addition to the Engine.ini tweaks for the best experience.

- Extract the mod and copy the
.pakfiles to:FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH/End/Content/Paks/~mods/. Create the~modsfolder if it does not already exist.

Best Settings for FF7 Rebirth on macOS M2 Max
My Setup
- Mac Studio M2 Max
- 12-core CPU, 38-core GPU
- 64 GB RAM
- macOS 26.1 Tahoe
After a fair amount of testing across different areas, these are the settings I landed on for the best balance of performance and image quality at 1080p.
Update: Someone at Reddit mentioned that DLSS is the main reason the cutscene stutter is happening. So I tested further and indeed it was the issue! But coupled with Dynamic Resolution Scaling. So the following is now my recommended settings. At demanding areas like Gongaga, I was still able to keep within 30+ FPS so its still quite playable.
Recommended Graphics Settings (1080p)
- Graphics Quality: Start with High, the adjust the settings below.
- Dynamic Resolution Scaling (Maximum): 100%
- Dynamic Resolution Scaling (Minimum): 100%
- Background Model Detail: Medium
- Ocean Detail: High
- Character Model Detail: High
- Effect Details: High
- Texture Resolution: High
- Shadow Quality: Low
- Fog Quality: High
- Anti-Aliasing: AMD FSR (as per v1.005 update)
- DLSS Frame Generation: Disabled.
I’m not a big fan of frame generation. I felt that even if the FPS is higher, what I experience and see on the screen feels exactly the same. If the GPU isn’t fast enough to render those frames, there’s nothing you can really do about it.

Here is my gameplay recording so you can see how the game looks and performs with these settings on the M2 Max.
First Impressions
1. 1080p is the sweet spot at 30-40+ FPS
At 1080p with these settings I am getting 30-40+ FPS, occasionally touching 50 FPS in less demanding areas. It is not silky smooth, but it is absolutely playable. The game is engaging enough that you quickly stop thinking about the frame rate and just enjoy the experience. With CrossOver Preview 20260717 (GPTK 4.0 beta), the same frame rate range feels considerably more stable in practice.
2. Background Model Detail is the frame rate killer
This single setting has the biggest impact on performance. Low is the most bearable option and after a short while playing, you genuinely stop noticing the lower-poly background objects. The characters, combat, and environments still look great. Medium is fine too if you do not mind sitting a little lower on the frame rate.
3. Real-time cutscenes stutter at the start of new scenes – Disable DLSS to fix it!
The in-game real-time cutscenes, not the pre-rendered videos, stutter noticeably when a new camera angle loads. You can see game assets streaming in at the start of each new scene. I believe this is a game optimisation issue. Fantasy Optimizer helps, but does not fully eliminate it. Once a scene is settled it runs smoothly enough.
As mentioned above, use TAA or AMD FSR with the latest v1.005 update and set max and min resolution to 100% and you should not see the stutter during the start of the cutscenes anymore! Thanks hassanzahid1999 to at reddit.
4. 1440p works but drops hard in detail-heavy areas
1440p is generally playable, but in visually dense areas like Kalm right at the start of the game, frame rates drop to around 25+ FPS. For now I am sticking with 1080p where performance stays more consistent. If you can tolerate the occasional dip, 1440p does look noticeably sharper.
5. M4 or M5 will run this significantly better
The GPU improvements from M2 to M4 and M5 are substantial. If you are running a newer Mac Studio or MacBook Pro with an M4 or M5 chip, expect considerably higher frame rates and smoother overall performance. Make me wish that the M5 Max on a Mac Studio is ready to be purchased 😀
Final Thoughts
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on macOS is not perfect, but it is more playable than I expected. With the three mods in place and the right settings dialled in, you can genuinely enjoy this game on an M2 Max. The world is beautiful, the combat is engaging, and the story keeps pulling you forward. Frame rate concerns fade quickly once you are in it.
If you have tried Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on your Mac, you will know what it is like to be pleasantly surprised by a demanding game running better than expected. FF7 Rebirth is a similar story, just a little rougher around the edges. Here is a video of Clair Obscur running on Mac if you are curious.
