How to run MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries on macOS with CrossOver
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is a Windows-only game with no native macOS port. But with CrossOver 26 and the latest D3DMetal improvements, it runs very well on Apple Silicon. I picked it up on GOG along with all the DLC and got it running on my Mac. Here is exactly how I did it.
CrossOver 26
CodeWeaver’s CrossOver is the tool that translates Windows applications and games to run on your Mac. CrossOver 26 in its preview version includes the latest D3DMetal libraries which make running Windows games on a Mac far better than ever before.
CrossOver costs about $74 normally, though it does go on sale from time to time. Once you have purchased and installed CrossOver, you are ready to start.
How to install MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries on macOS using CrossOver
Unlike Steam games, MechWarrior 5 on GOG provides offline installers. I didn’t use GOG Galaxy since it would add on an unnecessary layer to the installation. The process is a little different from a typical CrossOver installation but it is straightforward once you know the steps.
1. Download the GOG offline installers
Log into GOG.com and go to your library. Click on MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries and expand the “Download Offline Backup Game Installers” section. Download all parts of the base game and the installer for each DLC you own. Keep all files in the same folder.
For reference, you will need the following files:

2. Install the base game
Open CrossOver and search for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. It appears in the compatibility database rated “Runs Well.” Click Install, then when prompted to choose an installer file, navigate to your GOG installer folder and select the main .exe file.
CrossOver will show you a summary: it will install the game from your GOG installer into a new Windows 10 bottle called “MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries.” Click Install to confirm.
CrossOver will automatically install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. A dialog will pop up asking you to accept the licence terms. Tick the checkbox and click Install.
The GOG installer will then open showing installation options. The default path is C:\GOG Games\MW5Mercs and the game needs 97.2 GB. Leave the path as default, accept the EULA and click Install.
Installation takes a while depending on your drive speed. When it finishes you will see the success screen.
3. Install DLC
DLC has to be handled as “Unlisted applications” installed into the existing bottle. In CrossOver, click the Install button, then click the dropdown arrow next to Install and choose “Installer source,” then “Select an installer.”
Navigate to your GOG DLC installer files and select the first DLC .exe.
CrossOver will confirm it is going to install into the existing MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries bottle. That is exactly what you want.
The GOG DLC installer will open. Accept the EULA and click Install.
Repeat this for each DLC you own. Each one will show a success screen when done.
Checking your DLC
Later when you are in the game, you can verify all your DLC is recognised from the in-game store. Everything I installed shows as Owned.
4. Fix the mouse capture issue
Before launching, there is one Wine configuration change to make. Without it, the mouse cursor can escape the game window during play. On the MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries bottle, scroll down to Control Panels and open Wine Configuration. Go to the Graphics tab and make sure “Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows” is ticked.
5. Bottle settings and first launch
In the CrossOver bottle settings, the Graphics renderer defaults to D3DMetal which is the right choice for Apple Silicon. Leave DLSS and MSync off for now. Click the MechWarrior 5 icon to launch the game.
If you are wondering, I did try DXMT. While the performance seems slightly better since the game is a DirectX 11 game, there seems to be rendering issues. So D3DMetal is still the best option.
On first launch you may see a warning about the NVIDIA graphics driver. This is expected when you are running on CrossOver Preview 20260717. Just dismiss it with OK and the game will continue to load.

Installing mods
MechWarrior 5 has a healthy mod community and mods work fine under CrossOver. To install mods manually, right-click the bottle in CrossOver’s sidebar and choose “Open C: Drive.” Navigate to GOG Games > MW5Mercs > MW5Mercs > Mods and drop your mod folders there.
In-game, go to Options and then Mod Options to see and enable your installed mods. I am running YASV Complete Edition Patch, Yet Another Equipment Collection, Yet Another Mechlab, Yet Another Weapon Complete Edition and Advanced Zoom.

The game runs at a locked 60 fps on my M2 Max at 1080p with High settings. It is very playable.
