[Updated 23 March 2013] A couple of readers, Jan and frankspage (see comments below) has recently pointed to me that the script I provided below still does not allow the newer SSD MacBook Airs and MacBook Pro Retina to go into deep sleep mode. It looks like unmounting the SD Card isn’t enough and you really do need to eject out the drive.
